Home therapy

Also known as packing procrastination.....I'm working on clearing out my kitchen of extra stuff in preparation for being gone for a week (we're going on a cruise!!). Here are my procrastinating projects:

I recently saw an idea on Pinterest for scenting your home. Put some sliced lemon, fresh rosemary, and vanilla extract in some water and simmer on the stove. According to the post, it was an idea from Williams Sonoma - an old trick they used in the stores for making the space fragrant and crisp. I don't care where it came from, but I am a fan. It makes the house smell divine without having to light candle with some phony baloney smell - this scent is all natural. And it is great for me because we always have rosemary (we have a bush on the side of the house which just might take over the state due to the fact that I am lazy with yard work and have allowed it to grow to the size of a Buick), and I always have vanilla extract (I buy it frequently trying to find a superior brand - good vanilla extract DOES make a difference. Don't skimp). The lemon thing is kind of tricky, because I like to keep fresh lemons on hand, but I don't always do it. They go bad faster than I realize, and I hate to throw them out unused when I've allowed them to rot in the fruit bowl.

I recently bought an entire bag of lemons with intentions to use them for a couple of recipes and squeeze them for ice water. I recently read something about the benefits of lemon water. Don't remember the source or the details, but bottom line - it's good for you. Anyway, I made a couple of batches of lemon oat cream bars, and I might have used a few for something else, but once again, I was watching as 7 good lemons started to shrivel.

Today, I decided, NO MORE!!! I got to work with my microplane. If you don't have one, get one. It is an amazing kitchen tool for grating citrus peel, ginger, garlic, onion, chocolate, anything you want. I love it. I got to zesting all of those lemons, then put all of the zest in the freezer for future use for all those recipes that call for a little bit here and there. Then I sliced up all those zested lemons and put them in a freezer safe bag to be used in my home fragrance concoction. The lemons were past their prime, so I feel a little funny about using the juice for edibles, but they will work just fine for aromatherapy.

While I was at it, I zested up the last two oranges we had to freeze. But I was sure to suck the juice out of them before tossing them out.
And, while I'm busy busy busy being super productive at everything except for packing my family for a week long cruise, I decided that I needed to figure out how on earth I was going to get my legs good and exfoliated so I could spray on some self tanner that I bought at Target last week with good intention. Priorities!! I'm always searching the cosmetic aisles for something good, but I never know which one is really the best product. Cue sea salt scrub:

Throw some coarse sea salt, sweet almond oil, orange zest, lemon zest, lemon essential oil, and some sweet orange essential oil together and stir until it looks like a good consistency for smearing on your legs. I didn't measure a thing, I just stirred it all around until it looked about right. Then I squirted in a little rosewater and glycerin, just because I like that stuff.

As for the sea salt, they sell it in bulk at the Earth Fare! Who knew? It was a little sea water-ish in color (not in a pretty blue way, but more of a murky brown way), and I swear I pulled a shard of sea weed out of the bag. So, I'm not entirely trusting of using bulk goods sea salt in my food. But for beautification, most of us are good with just about anything. They say most make up is full of goat poop or placenta or something equally as horrid, but we just keep on slathering it on happy as clams. So, what the hell? Sea salt scrub for my legs it is!
You might be asking where I got that handy dandy little container. Well, let me tell you, it is an empty container of Tuck's pads. And if you don't know what Tuck's pads are, well bless your heart. Aren't you ADORABLE!
While you're at Earth Fare, pick up a bottle of this flavored water. My oh my, this is a treat....
What a productive mommy I've been today? What's that? How much do I have packed? Hahahahahaha - that's hilarious.

Also, today marks Joe's and my 11th wedding anniversary. In true procrastination style, we will be celebrating in a few days. Luckily it won't be while out on a run of the mill date night at a crap local restaurant but while floating along the Atlantic Ocean en route to a couple of Caribbean ports dining on gourmet, high calorie cuisine served to us in high style. The sea is calling.....
