Four Generations

We made a trip to Birmingham last week to visit Joe's parents and his grandmother (who was visiting Birmingham from Huntsville). We enjoyed lunch and a nice long visit. Nealy was her sweet, adorable self, and Jacks was pretty good, too (and he didn't break a thing!).
Jacks does adore his Racko!

Baby in a Bumbo!!

Look how darling little sweetie looks in her Bumbo seat. And she's so pleased with herself.

Big one looks a little ridiculous. And the helmet doesn't help.....he looks a little like a spaz.

Lake Martin with the Family

We all went down the road a few miles to enjoy Lake Martin for a week with most of my family last week. Our wonderful neighbor is kind enough to let us use his lake house when he's not using it, so we jumped at the chance to enjoy a week with my sister and her family and my parents. The week was full of good times - morning swims, paddle boat rides, watermelon, cold beer, board games, and lots of giggles with the kids. We also managed yet another group picture, and we completely blame Queenie for allowing Jacks to have his hat, sunglasses, and paci in the picture.

Traveling anywhere, no matter how near or far, with a toddler and an infant can be exhausting, so we're happy to be home despite how much we enjoy being with family on our favorite lake.

Although, our time here at home is somewhat limited. As long as some references check out, we will be having our floors refinished in two weeks. So, we have to move the majority of our house out the door before it can be done, and we are going to be staying elsewhere while all this goes down. We are so lucky that one of our friend's parents keeps an apartment in town for extended stays that happens to be empty right now, so we will be occupying it for a week or two while our house gets transformed! Given how much I have to do, this post is already longer than intended. Please enjoy some pictures from our trip, because I need to stop typing and start clearing the book shelves.

Should I do before and after pictures of the house? Maybe I can get on one of those swanky design blogs....

Jeanla was examining a splinter in her foot while Jacks copied her. Laura was smiling pretty for the camera despite the foot examination going on next to her.

Nealy was so good and sweet all week.

Jacks was NOT good and sweet all week - good thing he's got his Queenie to depend on when all else fails.

Jeanla was doing some lake studies....

Jacks was following her lead, as usual...

We managed to get some gorgeous pictures of the gorgeous Laura. She's at an age where she runs from the camera, but her Uncle Joe charmed some lovely shots out of her.

We miss everyone so much already. Until next time.... :)

Beckwith Bound

Camp Beckwith is a little slice of heaven situated on Weeks Bay, an estuary of Mobile Bay, in Fairhope, AL. It was my second home from the summers of 1986-1997. That's a lot of years, folks. For some reason, I have not visited my old home for about 10 years, until last week. My dearest of dear friends, Curt Kennington, is serving as the camp chaplain for the summer. So he and his little family, the fabulous Sellers and their precious baby Grayton, get to spend the summer enjoying the camp grounds and serving as the camp staff "Mom and Dad." I can think of nothing more spectacular, and I spend a lot of time these days being insanely jealous of Curt. However, of all of my Beckwith friends, no one has ever been more devoted to our sacred ground than Curt, who grew up spending summers and winters at Camp Beckwith. He is sort of a product of that place, and it is only fitting that he continues to serve there.

So, Joe and I loaded up our little family and headed south to meet up with a triumverate of veterans. Ashley, another dear friend and former Auburn roommate, now lives in Sydney, Australia. She was able to come for a visit since she was visiting with her father in Fairhope, and she had her darling toddler Oliver in tow. (Oliver and Grayton are about the same age - nearly one - so they toddled around together trying to avoid the wrath of the insane Jacks) And by another twist of fate, our friend Tara swung by. She was visiting with her parents in Seminole, a little hamlet just outside of Pensacola, while she is in transition between Los Angeles and Atlanta (anyone know of any acting jobs for this amazing talent??). So, these three ladies, being me, Ashley, and Tara, came together to surround Curt for one magical afternoon. Ashley and I fell into our old pattern of talking a mile a minute about everything and everybody, while Curt shared info with us about this and that since he is always in the know about most things, and Tara got on with her suave self interjecting the sliest of sly comments here and there (but as you'll see from the pictures, she was most thrilled to get her hands on all the babies!! I need her around more often -which I might get the luxury of having since she'll be down the road in Atl) Joe and Sellers were odd men out, wondering who on earth were all these people that we were gossiping about so enthusiastically. We all felt so comfortable with the fact that we all still love each other and know each other so well after so much time has passed. I still miss my days at camp everyday. I can't wait to go back and visit with Curt and Sellers a while longer. An afternoon was not enough.

The four of us on the dock. There is a series of these pictures, some of which are very telling of our personalities. I'll save those for us, only we will get it (isn't that always the way with old camp friends? full of obnoxious inside jokes!!)

Tara grabbed Nealy almost immediately.

Before we knew it, she had Ollie.

Grayton says, "Hey man, whassup?"

I was also thrilled for my children to have their first Beckwith experience, complete with a camp meal. The announcements song has remained the same after all these years, and we all joined in with the campers and staff to sing and beat on the tables followed by the same old announcements that we all as counselors made a dozen times before (If you tie dyed today, be sure to pick up your shirts outside the cabins......The dance will be held in Wilson Hall tonight at.....Don't forget to check your contact information on the posted sheets so we can correct them before tomorrow......and so on.....). Jacks was clearly enthralled and amazed with Beckwith, and he promptly made himself at home upon the first invitation to play. Here's what happened..... Anne Talbert was one of my campers (I think....I lose track of who was at Beckwith when and for what reason), as well as a child of Beckwith like Curt, and she now serves as the camp nurse for the summer. Her 4 year old daughter Grace saw Jacks approaching the waterfront, and she immediately ran up and greeted him by saying, "Hi Jacks, do you want to come and play with me?" Let's see, how can I describe how enthusiastically and seriously he took that offer? Have you ever seen the Firm with Tom Cruise? Do you remember the foot chase scene where Tom ran his little heart out? That was Jacks. Only instead of running away from something, he was running toward the bay while throwing his pacifier and blanket behind his head toward me because those things were just slowing him down! He saw that Grace was playing in the water, and he was clearly not dressed for the occasion, so he promptly took all of his clothes off. I was okay with no shirt and pants, but it was his decision to ditch the diaper. Hey, what can I say? He was born to be at Beckwith? Am I admitting to untoward behavior on the waterfront? Not at all. But am I denying it? Not really.....I recently suggested to Curt that he write a blog to chronicle the events of this summer. Beckwith is in some financial jeopardy, and it's future is unsure. This could be an important summer for Beckwith. Check in with Curt if you are interested in learning more about our little Beckwithian universe. I hope that if he gets more visitors, he'll actually write some posts (he's only written one vague general post that alludes to me telling him to write a blog, but doesn't say a damn thing. Get on it, man!!!).

Okay - I have tons more blogging to do to catch everyone up on recent events, but it'll take me a while. This post took me forever! Maybe because it's pretty sappy and personal, and I tend to hide behind snarky and quippy to avoid the cheesy stuff. So, I'll get to our family lake trip later on.

But for now, Happy Father's Day to my sweetest Joe who we would be completely lost without, and to my daddy, my brother, my brother-in-law, and all my friends who get to be daddies. I hope your day was perfectly perfect.

Jacks loves Beckwith

I don't have the time to blog about our visit to my old camp last week because I need to finish packing for the lake, then get on out there. But you can see how much Jacks enjoyed playing in Weeks Bay (he is the one who undressed himself - I am not encouraging naked baby habits!!). Have a great week - I'll be back soon!

Jacks uses the pedals!

Jacks has had his Radio Flyer tricycle since last Christmas, and he has been working very hard at actually using the pedals. He's been able to pedal backwards a little, but he usually just gives up and pushes himself around with his feet. Well, he's finally put it all together, and he's probably a little taller, and he can work those pedals. It has been a very exciting milestone around here. Today we took him over to Town Creek park so he could ride his bike freely on a flat surface (our driveway is a kind of steep hill). Things were going great until a friendly labrador puppy came galloping up to Jacks for a friendly introduction. Well, Jacks has an irrational fear of dogs. I'm not sure what it stems from, but he can't seem to get past it. He talks about dogs a lot, and when we visit some friends with a dog, he'll talk about that dog long after we've left. After meeting that lab, Jacks refused to ride his tricycle anymore, and he wanted one of us to hold him. Oh well, tricycle fun will have to continue another day.
The up side is we saw one of my former and Joe's future students, and she took a family picture for us. I think this is the first one!! We'll have to take a lot more of these.....

Lil Cutie....

Little cutie, little sweetie, from her head down to her feetie.
(that's from the Wonder Pets - I didn't write that gem myself....)

Lil Sweetie

Ah! Mah sweet bebe.....

Georgia Aquarium

Jacks ran back and forth in front of the tanks screaming, "WOW!!!!" while we were at the Georgia Aquarium on Sunday morning. And who wouldn't at all these amazing sights to see? Joe took a few gratuitous shots of the sea life, as you can see above, because it was all so beautiful. It was semi crowded, but late morning was a very good time to go. The crowds were picking up as we walked out at around 1 in the afternoon. If it's too crowded, it's too hard to get up to the tanks to see these amazing wonders.

Last February, my team took our 6th graders on a field trip to this aquarium, and it really made me want to bring young Jacks. But, some teachers and I saw a child get separated from his mother in the blink of an eye. My friend Jenn awesomely helped the child get back to his mama, but it still really affected me. So, we borrowed a baby leash to keep Jacks wrangled while we were in the aquarium. Yes, you read that right - a baby leash. It is really a monkey back pack, and the tail is a long leash with a loop on the end of it. We got some interesting looks from people, but we knew where our child was, he was able to run freely, and we got to enjoy the fish with him because we weren't hunched over chasing him. So, although I claimed I would NEVER put my child on a leash, I'm not too proud to change my tune.

Jacks might be a little young for a venue like this one - the chances that he'll remember this visit are kind of slim - but he loved it while he was there, and his admittance was FREE because he's still under 3.

Nealy was there, too! The fish above her head proves it!

Look at how huge this fella is compared to Jacks's head.

It looks like Jacks is touching this alligator!

He loved these star fish....

After the Aquarium, Jacks had a ton of fun at the play ground in Centennial Olympic Park. I wish we had a playground this toddler friendly in Auburn. There are two playgrounds, and one of them is covered in cork. He played in both areas, but the cork covered one was a toddler's paradise.

The traffic in Atlanta might drive my blood pressure through the roof, but it was totally worth it. We had a great time!

don't even get me started on Ikea.....we don't have pictures, because it seemed silly to take pictures of us shopping at a home goods store. However, since I have declared Ikea my own personal Disney World, now I'm sad I don't have pictures of it. Love, love, love, love, love, love Ikea. I am desperate to go back without kids, because they both started to lose it about half way through the market place. So, I reluctantly raced past lighting and textiles and gardening and so much more I tearfully bypassed in order to get my screaming babies to the car. But, we did eat supper in the cafeteria there, and it was divine! Swedish meatballs with ligonberry sauce - YUM! The best part? We all ate for $17. It was twice that at the Aquarium for less superior food.

Okay, gotta finish feeding little. More in a bit...

Glad to be home....

ICE Atlanta

I started a long drawn out post about every detail of our mini vacation to Atlanta, and then it occurred to me that you probably don't care all that much about the minutia of our tiny trip. Which was tiny in the scheme of things, but huge to us. Overnight in a hotel in a big city that we're not all that familiar with, with a 2 month old and an extremely precocious 2 year old, with just us, no parents or friends or anyone else to lend a hand - was very difficult. But we're so proud of ourselves and we had a blast.
So, rather than bore you all with the teeniest of details, I will show you our trip in a couple of posts, the first of which is all about the Indie Craft Experience. This was an awesome event in Centennial Olympic Park on Saturday and Sunday. We were very lucky it was two days, because both kids started to lose it a little on Saturday when we went, and we had to cut it short and check into the hotel for nap time. So, we went back on Sunday to enjoy the wares all the indie crafters had to share. We also enjoyed the park, complete with awesome playgrounds and a fountain area (you know the kind where the jets shoot out of the ground?). Enjoy the pics....

Jacks fell in love with this felt pirate hat (which was $40, so we left it there), and he had a hissy fit when we tore him away from the felt hat booth. He even declared he wanted an eye patch when he put that hat on. Here he is pretending to be a pirate, complete with a scowl and an, "arrrrrgh!"
Joe had to take a picture of these sassy girls in their sassy hats!

Jacks made a fool of himself in front of these hipster Latvian girls by dumping out his juice down his shirt. Here is a dramatic reinactment of said event....

Awesome journals made from recycled books...

Nealy was trying to not sweat to death in her stroller....

Jacks got a nice cool down in the fountains before we hit the road for home.
